Windows Modem Speaker Volume Controls

The Modems property sheet contains a Speaker Volume slider that controls the modem speaker volume. This is the global volume setting for the modem speaker.

In addition to this setting, each connectoid for most communications programs in Windows has its own speaker volume control. The default value for this setting is the same as the global volume setting when the application is first started.

The following steps demonstrate the relationship between the global modem speaker volume setting and the speaker volume setting in connectoids:

1. Create a connectoid for the phone number 999-555-1212 in HyperTerminal and name it TEST ONE. In the Connect dialog box for this number, click the Modify button, and then click the Configure button on the Phone Number tab. Note that the setting for the Speaker Volume slider is the same as the global setting in the Control Panel Modems tool.
2. Minimize the connectoid (but do not close it). Change the global modem speaker volume setting as follows:
   
   
   1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
   2. Double-click the Modems icon.
   3. Click the Properties button.
   4. Adjust the Speaker Volume slider to a new setting.
   5. Click the OK button.
   6. Click the Close button.
3. Create a second connectoid. Use the phone number 999-555-1234 and name the connectoid TEST TWO. In the Connect dialog box, click Modify and then click Configure. Note that the Speaker Volume setting is the same as the setting for TEST ONE. This behavior occurs because the HyperTerminal application took a "snapshot" of the global speaker volume setting when it was first started. The HyperTerminal application uses this snapshot for each connectoid you create in the current session.
4. Exit HyperTerminal and then start it again.
5. Create a third connectoid with the number 999-555-5678 and the name TEST THREE. Note that the speaker volume setting in TEST THREE matches the current global speaker volume setting. This occurs because the HyperTerminal application took a new snapshot of the global setting when you started HyperTerminal again in step 4.

If you want to change the speaker volume for a connectoid, you must change it within the connectoid itself, because the connectoid no longer uses the global speaker volume setting.
