PRJ4: "Cannot Find FILENAME.MPP" Inserting Project File as Object

Q128011

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Microsoft Project file as an object in a client application, you may receive the following Microsoft Project error message

Cannot find '<DRIVE>\<FILENAME>.MPP'
where <DRIVE> is the location of the file that you are inserting as an object, and <FILENAME> is the name of the file that you are inserting.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you insert a Microsoft Project file as an object in a client application, if the Microsoft Project filename does not have a filename extension. For example, if you create the file FromMac in Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, you receive the following error message in the client application:

Cannot find '<DRIVE>\FROMMAC.MPP'
If the Microsoft Project file that you select to insert as an object does not have a filename extension, and if another Microsoft Project file with the same name, exists in the same directory and DOES have an extension, the file that has the extension is inserted in the client application.

Note that this problem does not occur when you insert a Microsoft Word file or a Microsoft Excel file as an object in a client application if the file does not have an extension.

Additionally, this problem does not occur when you insert a Microsoft Project file as an object in Microsoft Excel version 5.0c.

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this problem, rename the file that does not have an extension so that the file has an extension. For example, in the example above, rename FromMac to FromMac.MPP.

Note that the filename extension that you give the file does not have to be .MPP to work around this problem.

MORE INFORMATION

After you receive the error message described above, you may receive an additional error message in the following client applications:

Microsoft Excel (version 5.0)

Cannot insert object.

Microsoft Word

The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Sorry, memory is tool full to perform the operation. Try again after closing a window, or exiting another application.
