SUMMARY

A proxy server is a computer used to separate the Internet from an internal network for security and connectivity reasons. If you are attempting to connect to the Internet from your LAN, you must connect to this computer (proxy server or domain) to gain access to the Internet.

This article describes how to configure Internet Assistant to use these proxy servers. For more information, please see your network or system administrator.

To configure your proxy server, do the following:

Internet Assistant 2.0z, 2.03z, 2.04z

1. Choose File Browse Web.



2. Choose Tools Proxy Server.



3. Check the Use Proxy Server Box.



4. Fill in the full URL of the Proxy Server in the dialog provided. For example, if your proxy server is www.microsoft.com enter:

   http://www.microsoft.com:80.

   The port number can be appended to the URL by using a colon and the port number. In the example above, the port number is 80.

Internet Assistant 1.0

1. Using a text editor such as Notepad, edit the IWIA.INI file. This file can be found in your Windows directory, typically C:\WINDOWS.



2. Locate or add the section [Proxy Servers].



3. Type the proxy server IP addresses and port numbers, so that this section looks like this:

   
         [Proxy Servers]
         FTP=111.222.333.444
         Gopher=666.777.888.999
         HTTP=333.444.555.666
         FTP Port=80
         Gopher Port=80
         HTTP Port=80 

   Note: These IP addresses and port entries are examples. Contact your system administrator to determine your IP addresses and port numbers.



4. Save IWIA.INI and quit Notepad.



5. Start Word, then from the File menu, choose Browse Web.



6. Choose the URL button and type the protocol and server name, for example: http://www.microsoft.com/ and choose OK.

3. Type the IP addresses of the servers you do not want accessed by your proxy server. This section should look similar to this:

         ftp.microsoft.com        (if you want to have an entire domain be
                                   exempt from the proxy server) 

   Note: These IP addresses are examples. Contact your system administrator for the correct IP addresses for your site.



4. Save IWIA.INI and quit Notepad.



5. Start Word. From the File menu, choose Browse Web.



6. Choose the URL button, type in the URL for your internal Web server and choose OK.
