PRJ4: No Error Message When Linked File Is Missing

Q128183

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you update a link in your project, by using the Update Now button in the Links dialog box, you may not receive an error message if the linked file is missing.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs for example if you create a link in your project file to data in another application by using a Dynamic Date Exchange (DDE) link. If you then delete the source data, you do not receive an error message when you update the link using the Update Now button in the Links dialog box. This behavior only occurs when you link the data using DDE links. This behavior does not occur with OLE links which is the default linking method in Microsoft Project.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, delete the link to the missing file from your project or restore the missing file if it is located in a different folder.

MORE INFORMATION

If you update the link by opening the file and choosing to reestablish the link, you may receive an error message similar to the following in Microsoft Project if the linked file is missing

Cannot connect to link '[<workbook>]<sheet>!R1C1'. Do you want to delete the link?
where <workbook> is the name of the workbook that contains the linked data, and <sheet> is the name of the linked worksheet.

In Microsoft Project version 3.0, when you update a link to a worksheet that is missing, you receive the following error message
Cannot connect to link 'Excel|<Worksheet>|R1C1'
where <Worksheet> is the name of the linked file that is missing.
