PRJ4: Hang in Print Preview with Too Many Columns on Page

Q128982

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you specify a large number of columns to print on all pages of your project, Microsoft Project may stop responding (hang) when you print the project or view the project in print preview.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the number of columns that you specify to print on all pages fits on a page, but the space remaining on the page is not wide enough for a minimum of one timescale unit to fit on the page as well. When this occurs, Microsoft Project goes into an infinite loop, and stops responding when you print the project, or view the project in print preview.

If you choose Print or Print Preview from the File menu under this condition, you may receive the following error message before Microsoft Project stops responding:

The number of columns that you have specified to print on all pages is wider than one page width.
NOTE: This problem does not occur in Microsoft Project for the Macintosh.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, when you use the View tab in the Page Setup dialog box to specify a given number of columns to print on each page, enter a number of columns that will fit on the page, and still allow room for one timescale unit to fit on the page as well.

NOTE: The number of columns that fits on a page depends on the width of the columns and the width of the paper to which you are printing.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

If the number of columns that you specify to print on all pages is wider than can physically fit on a page, you receive the following error message when you choose Print or Print Preview from the File menu:

The number of columns that you have specified to print on all pages is wider than one page width.
This error message is followed by the error message:
An error occurred during printing or copying.
If the number of columns that you specify to print on all pages is wider than can physically fit on a page, you receive only the second of the two error messages above if you choose the Print button, or the Print Preview button on the Standard toolbar.

However, if the number of columns that you select to print on all pages physically fits on the page, but doesn't allow enough space on the page for a minimum of one timescale unit to print, Microsoft Project stops responding (hangs) when you view the project in print preview.
