SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you press ALT+TAB while the Welcome dialog box is displayed, Microsoft Project stops responding (hangs) instead of switching to another application as expected.

CAUSE

When you run Microsoft Project for the first time after running Setup, a Hello dialog box appears, describing the PlanningWizard. While this dialog box is displayed, you cannot switch to another application, either by pressing ALT+TAB or CTRL+ESC, or by choosing a button from the Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) toolbar.

When you close the Hello dialog box, the Welcome dialog box appears. You cannot switch to another application while the Welcome dialog box is open. If you attempt to do so by pressing ALT+TAB while the Welcome dialog box is displayed, Microsoft Project stops responding (hangs).

NOTE: This behavior occurs anytime the Welcome dialog box is displayed. The Welcome dialog box appears the first time you run Microsoft Project after you install it. However, you can also choose to have the Welcome dialog box appear each time you run Microsoft Project.

In Microsoft Project for the Macintosh, if you use the Microsoft Office Manager QuickSwitch option, you cannot switch to another application by pressing COMMAND+TAB while either the Hello dialog box or the Welcome dialog box is open. However, the application does not stop responding (hang) when you attempt this.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close the Welcome dialog box in Microsoft Project before you switch to another application.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
