SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Details button in the New dialog box
to display additional information about the available files, a template
file on the Excel tab may be displayed with a file size of 0K instead of
the expected file size. Additionally, the Preview box for the template file
may contain the text "Preview not available" instead of the contents of the
template file.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if you save a Microsoft Excel template file to the
XLSTART folder. The Microsoft Excel XLSTART folder is available for
compatibility with Microsoft Excel version 5.0. In Microsoft Excel version
7.0, you can still create a new workbook from a template stored in this
folder. However, when you view the template file in the New dialog box, and
you display the file details, the file size is displayed as 0K, and the
Preview box does not contain a preview of the file.
All new templates that you create in Microsoft Excel version 7.0 should be
saved to the Microsoft Office TEMPLATE folder or the EXCEL folder in the
TEMPLATE folder. When you save a file as a Template in Microsoft Excel, the
default file location is the Microsoft Office TEMPLATE folder.
RESOLUTION
To display the correct file size and preview of a template file in the New
dialog box, save the file to the default template folder, the Microsoft
Office TEMPLATE folder or the EXCEL folder in the TEMPLATE folder, instead
of the XLSTART folder.
