MPRJ4: Hang After Reestablishing Links to Excel Worksheet

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you open a file that contains an OLE link to a Microsoft Excel worksheet, when you choose to reestablish the link, you may receive the following error message

Cannot connect to link '<Workbook>!<Sheet>!<cellref>'. Do you want to delete the link?
where <Workbook>, <Sheet>, and <cellref> are the workbook, worksheet and cell reference in Microsoft Excel that contain the OLE linked information.

When you choose either Yes or No to delete the link, you receive the following error message
Sorry, a system error occurred.
"Microsoft Excel"
error type 11
and you must restart your Macintosh.

NOTE: In some cases, Project quits after displaying the linked information dialog box and causes the following error message:
The application "unknown" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.


CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following are true:


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1

Save the Microsoft Excel file that contains the information that is linked to the Microsoft Project file before you open the Microsoft Project file.

Method 2

Before you open the Microsoft Project file that contains both information linked TO a Microsoft Excel worksheet and information linked FROM a Microsoft Excel worksheet, make sure that the clipboard does not contain OLE information by copying information from an application that does not support OLE, such as TeachText.
