SYMPTOMS

When you create a dynamic data exchange (DDE) link to a Microsoft Project document from an external source such as Microsoft Excel, if you edit the link and then choose to change the source, you may break the link.

CAUSE

This problem may be caused if you enter the DDE link parameters incorrectly.

In a DDE link, exclamation point and pipe (|) characters separate parts of the link. If you enter these separators incorrectly, or if they are entered in the wrong location, the link will be broken.

Note that reentering the path does not reestablish the link.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, do not edit the source link manually.

If you must reestablish the link manually, do not choose the No button when you receive the "Invalid Source: Do you want to correct it?" alert message. In addition, when you edit the path, be sure to include all brackets and exclamation points in their correct locations. If you enter an incorrect path, do the following to reestablish the link:

  1. Delete the existing link.
  2. Recopy and paste the object (using the Paste Special command with the Paste Link option).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
