WordPerfect Footnotes Show as Question Marks in Works 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you convert a WordPerfect 5.1 file that contains footnotes to a Works 3.0 or 4.0 file, you encounter the following problems:
  • The footnote numbers in the body of the document are not superscript.

    -and-
  • The numbers are replaced by question marks.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must recreate the footnotes.

Works 4.0, 4.5, and 4.5a

You can edit the footnote information directly in the document.

Works 3.0

To recreate the footnotes do the following:
  1. Highlight the footnote text.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
  3. Delete the footnote number from the body of the document.
  4. From the Insert menu, choose Footnote.
  5. Make sure Numbered is selected. Choose OK.
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.
Repeat these steps for all footnotes.

The footnote numbers convert correctly when you save a WordPerfect for Windows 6.00 file as a WordPerfect 5.1 document. However, the footnote numbers will still not be superscript.
