SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Project 4.0 for Windows cannot read text-based files that were created in Microsoft Project for the Macintosh version 1.1 or 3.0. When you attempt to open a text-based file, you receive the following error messages:

An error occurred during import (line #)
-and-
Select Yes to continue, No to continue without error messages, or Cancel to stop import.
If you choose Yes or No to continue, Microsoft Project will display a blank project file.

This problem also occurs with MPX files (which is the only file format you can use to open a version 1.1 file in Microsoft Project version 4.0).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Project 4.0 for Windows does not recognize and handle the Macintosh CR character correctly.

WORKAROUND

To bypass this problem, use one of the procedures below.

Microsoft Project version 3.0 is available

Open the file in either Microsoft Project for Windows version 3.0 or Project for Macintosh version 3.0 and save the file as a Microsoft Project file. With the file in this format, you will be able to successfully open the file in Microsoft Project 4.0 for Windows.

Microsoft Project version 3.0 is not available

Open the file in a program such as Microsoft Excel, and save it in the CSV format. If you are saving the file on a Macintosh, save the file in the MS-DOS Text file format.
-or-
Open the file in a program such as Microsoft Word, and save the file as Text Only.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
