------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher versions 2.0 and 2.0a - Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0 and 5.0c - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c - Microsoft Works for Windows, versions 3.0, 3.0a, 3.0b ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== When you copy a Microsoft Excel chart and paste it into a Publisher document, the chart image changes size depending on the size of the original chart in Microsoft Excel. When you attempt to resize the object, it results in the object resizing itself back to its original size, and the resized amount displaying only spreadsheet cells and not the chart. CAUSE ===== This problem occurs because when you choose Copy or Cut on the Edit menu in Microsoft Excel and the chart is on top of a spreadsheet, you are actually copying the spreadsheet cells that have the chart embedded into them. Therefore, when you paste and resize the Clipboard contents, the window will display more cells of the spreadsheet itself, as opposed to actually resizing the chart. This is a limitation in Microsoft Excel for Windows. WORKAROUNDS =========== Method 1: Run the Chart Wizard by doing the following. a. In Microsoft Excel, select the data cells to be used in the chart. b. On the Insert menu, click Chart, and then click As New Sheet. This will run the Chart Wizard, which will place the chart onto a new sheet. c. Copy the chart from the new sheet to the Clipboard, switch to Publisher, and paste this chart correctly into Publisher. Method 2: Choose Picture as the object type. a. Select the chart inside Microsoft Excel. On the Edit menu, click Copy. Minimize or close Microsoft Excel. b. Switch to Publisher, click Paste Special on the Edit menu, and then click Picture as the object type. Click OK. Method 3: Link the chart. a. Click the chart in Microsoft Excel to select it. On the Edit menu, click Copy. b. Switch to Publisher and click Paste Special on the Edit menu. c. Click the Paste Link option. d. In the As box, click Microsoft Excel 5.0 Chart Object. Click OK. Method 4: Resize the chart inside the spreadsheet. a. Click the chart in Microsoft Excel to select it. On the Edit menu, click Copy. b. Switch to Publisher and click Paste Object on the Edit menu. c. In Publisher, double-click the embedded chart and then resize it inside the spreadsheet. d. Click outside of the chart (on the desktop area of Publisher) for the changes to take effect.
