-------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a -------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== After installing the prerelease (beta) version of Netscape 1.1, you may encounter error messages in Microsoft Publisher that start with the word "Zikes!", especially when running various PageWizards. Also, you may not be able to perform a Paste Link into Publisher from other programs. CAUSE ===== The prerelease version of the Netscape World Wide Web browser did not install a complete set of .dll files, while later versions did. Mixed versions of .dll files can cause problems when Publisher tries to communicate with other OLE2 entities. RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this problem, you will need to rename or delete the affected files and reinstall the Publisher versions of these files. (Or, if you have Microsoft Office 4.2 or 4.3, or Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0, install the versions of the files included with these products instead.) The dates of these files will be the same dates as Netscape's. 1. Exit Windows to an MS-DOS prompt. If Windows is on another drive, change to that drive now. 2. Change to your Windows System subdirectory, which is usually done by typing in the following command: cd\windows\system 3. Rename the files in the list below using the REN command, as shown in the following example: ren compobj.dll compobj.old The list of files to rename is as follows: Compobj.dll Ole2.dll Ole2conv.dll Ole2disp.dll Ole2nls.dll Ole2prox.dll Storage.dll Typelib.dll Pubole.dll Puboleui.dll 4. Restart Windows by typing "win" (without the quotation marks), pressing ENTER, and then immediately holding down the SHIFT key to bypass your Startup Group items. 5. Reinstall the OLE2 .dll set. This can be done in one of two ways: Method 1: Rerun Publisher Setup: a. Insert Microsoft Publisher Disk 1 - Setup in your floppy disk drive (this example uses drive A). b. From Program Manager, click Run from the File menu. On the command line, type "a:\setup" (without the quotation marks). Click OK. c. Click Custom Installation. d. From the Custom Installation screen, clear every item except Program Files. This option will install the missing files. e. Click Install Now. When finished, the OLE2 .dlls from Publisher should be reinstalled. Method 2: Run Office 4.2 or 4.3, or PowerPoint 4.0, Setup: Run Viewer Setup from either Microsoft Office 4.2 or 4.3 or from Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0. (The Viewer installation disk is the last disk in the set of installations disks.) To run Viewer Setup, do the following: a. Insert the Viewer disk in your floppy disk drive (this example uses drive A). b. From Program Manager, click Run on the File menu. On the command line, type "a:\vsetup" (without the quotation marks). Click OK. c. Accept the default choices, and then let installation continue. d. You may have to restart Windows, so let the Setup program do so. The OLE2 .dlls have been installed. MORE INFORMATION ================ The final release version of Netscape installs OLE2 .dlls dated 10/10/94, and they seem to function properly with Publisher.
