WD6X: Error Message: "Word Cannot Save or Create This File"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a Word for the Macintosh document to a shared drive, you may receive the following error message

   Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure the disk is not write
   protected (<file name>).

where <file name> is the name of the document you are trying to save.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when you try to save a file to a computer whose name is the same as the computer you are working from. For example, your hard drive is named "Macintosh HD," and the name of the computer you are trying to save to is also named "Macintosh HD."

This error can also occur when you try to save a file to a computer whose Machine name is the same as the computer you are working from. For example, your Machine is named "Big Bird," and the name of the computer you are trying to save to is also named "Big Bird".

This can also happen with network volume names, such as "Public."

RESOLUTION

This problem was corrected in Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, rename one of the computers.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
