WD: Document Template Path Not Converted from WinWord to MacWord

SYMPTOMS

If you are using Word for the Macintosh, and if you open a document that was originally created in Word for Windows, the following elements may be missing from the the template:

Macros
Toolbars
AutoText

This problem occurs when the document is based on a template other than Normal. Note that this problem occurs even if the template that the document is based on has been moved to the specified Template folder on the Macintosh.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Word.0 and later for the Macintosh does not correctly convert the MS-DOS based template path into a path that points to the proper Template folder on the Macintosh.

RESOLUTION

If users on both platforms share documents, you can avoid the problem by having the Macintosh user reattach the proper template. Both template path names are stored in the file. Correctly establishing and saving the file on the Macintosh resolves the problem.

To correct this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the document in Word for the Macintosh.
  2. In Word 98, click Templates and Add-ins on the Tools menu. In Word 6.0 and 6.0.1, click Templates on the File menu.

    Notice the MS-DOS path in the Document Template text box.
  3. Click Attach.
  4. In the Open dialog box, select the appropriate document template to attach the document to. Click Open.
  5. In the Templates dialog box, click OK.
The document is now attached to the proper template and the macros, AutoText entries, and toolbars should be available.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0, 6.0.1, and 98 for the Macintosh.
