PRJ4: Can't Open Workgroup Mail - "Work Not Valid" Message

Q132088

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a mail message that is a reply to a Send Task Request, you receive the following message:

Work not Valid

CAUSE

The machine that sent you the message is using a decimal separator in a work value, but your machine is set to a comma separator. (To locate the separator setting, check the International settings in Windows Control Panel.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

The International settings within the Windows Control Panel allow users to change which characters are used to show different formats for dates, numbers, and time. If the decimal separator (the character that separates whole numbers from its fractional component) is set to a period on an originating machine, and a comma on a destination machine, Task Requests sent from the originating machine using Microsoft Project will fail to open when received at the destination.

In the case above, error checking done on the Work field to ensure valid information is what causes the "Work not Valid" error message.

Since the formats for the Work field are based on the Control Panel international formats, these should be consistent across all workstations that use Microsoft Project's workgroup features.
