To enable encryption in SQL Server 6.0 and 6.5, select the Enable Multi Protocol Encryption checkbox in the SQL Server Setup program when you add the Multi-Protocol network library. To enable encryption in SQL Server 7.0, when you add the Multi-Protocol network library using the SQL Server Network utility, select the "Enable multi-protocol encryption" checkbox. In SQL Server 2000, every network library has a checkbox in the SQL Server Network Utility that allows you to enable encryption.

SQL Server relies on the Microsoft Windows operating system to perform the encryption of network traffic. Therefore, the operating system determines the size and type of the encryption key.
