Correctly Spelled Word in Converted WordPerfect File Flagged

SYMPTOMS

When you open a WordPerfect 5.x or 6.x document in Word and run the spelling checker, correctly spelled words may be flagged as misspelled.


CAUSE

This problem occurs if you installed the WordPerfect Supplemental Converter Kit for Word 6.0 and your WordPerfect document contains accented characters or other foreign language characters that are mapped to characters from TrueType symbol fonts provided with the kit or with WordPerfect.

If Word uses one of these fonts to represent a character, Word's spelling checker does not recognize the character and flags words containing these fonts as misspelled. This occurs because Word's spelling checker cannot recognize any non-ANSI characters (characters inserted from unique character sets such as that used by WordPerfect's Multinational fonts).


RESOLUTION

The WordPerfect symbol fonts supplied with the kit or with WordPerfect are normally used to enhance the number of WordPerfect special (compose) characters that Word can retain. However, many of these characters, including the most commonly used Western European foreign language characters, exist in the ANSI character set and will be retained even if these fonts are not installed. Therefore, to avoid the spell check problem, remove these fonts from your system by using the Windows Control Panel.
