WD: All Text Lost Following Empty Field in Word 2.x, MacWord 5.x

SYMPTOMS

If a Word version 6.0 and later document contains one or more instances of an empty field ({ }), all document contents following this field are lost when you open the document into Word 2.0 for Windows or Word 5.1 for the Macintosh.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

From within Word 6.0 and later, save documents as Word 2.0 for Windows or Word 5.1 for Macintosh format. To do this, click Save As on the File menu, select the Word 2.x for Windows or Word 5.1 for Macintosh file type, and then click OK.

Method 2

Remove the empty field entries and resave the document in Word format prior to attempting to open the document into Word 2.0 for Windows or Word 5.1 for the Macintosh.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Word 6.0 converter supplied in the Word 6.0 Converter Kit for Word 2.0 and the Word for Windows&Macintosh converter.
