The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0 --------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you click Go To on the Edit menu (or press F5) or click Name, and then click Define Name on the Insert menu, Microsoft Excel may take longer than expected to display the corresponding dialog box.

Additionally, when you enter a defined name in the Reference box in the Go To dialog box and then click OK, you may receive the following error message:

   Name not found

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if your workbook contains a large number of defined names. For example, with 2000 defined names, it may take up to five minutes to display the Go To or the Define Name dialog box, depending on the type of computer and the amount of memory you have available.

Additionally, you may receive the error message described above when you enter a defined name in the Reference box in the Go To dialog box if there are many names defined in the workbook and if the name you entered is near the end of the list of defined names.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you must limit the number of defined names that you create in a workbook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0a for the Macintosh.
