Joystick Port Is Not Removed When You Remove Sound Card
Article ID: 132517
Article Last Modified on 1/19/2007
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
This article was previously published under Q132517
SYMPTOMS
When you remove a sound card from your computer and remove the sound card
in Device Manager, the joystick (game) port on the sound card continues to
appear in Device Manager.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because there is no parent-child relationship between
the sound card and the joystick port. Therefore, when you remove the sound
card in Device Manager, the joystick port is not automatically removed.
RESOLUTION
To manually remove the joystick port in Device Manager, follow these
steps:
- Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, and then
click Properties.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Sound, Video, And Game
Controllers to expand the branch.
- Click the Gameport Joystick device, and then click
Remove.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
Because the virtual joystick device driver (Vjoyd.vxd) is unable to detect
whether the joystick port has been removed or the joystick port is present
but has no joystick attached, the driver is always active.
As a result, when plug and play hardware detection is run on your computer,
the joystick port is not automatically detected by Windows.
