SYMPTOMS

When you open a file in Notepad, you may receive the following error message:

Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Notepad program in Windows 95/98 is slightly larger and the space to edit data slightly smaller than the Notepad program in Windows 3.x. Therefore, some files that you can open in Notepad in Windows 3.x may be too large for Notepad in Windows 95/98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reduce the size of the file, or use a different text editor, such as WordPad.
