PUB2: Zikes! Font Problem Running Wizard on Windows 95
Q133057
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a
- Microsoft Windows 95
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOM
=======
When running Microsoft Publisher 2.0 or 2.0a under Microsoft Windows 95,
you may receive the following error message when you use a Publisher
PageWizard Assistant with any Hewlett-Packard (HP) Series 4 or Hewlett-
Packard (HP) Series 5 printer set as the default printer:
Zikes!
This design assistant can't find one of the fonts it needs to create
your publication. A different font will be substituted, but the
publication may not look as it was designed to look.
CAUSE
=====
HP Series 4 printer drivers ship with Arial and Times New Roman as
installed printer fonts. Windows correctly reports these fonts as TrueType.
When you set the HP 4 series printer as the default printer, the driver
reports these fonts as printer fonts.
Because Publisher identifies the font as a printer font, the program
algorithm substitutes the first available font of the same class (for
example, san serif or serif) and sends the "Zikes!" error message.
WORKAROUNDS
===========
Two possible workarounds are available:
Method 1: This method allows you to retain the complete feature set of the
HP 4 series printers, without receiving an error message while
running a wizard.
To set the HP LaserJet III driver as the default printer driver:
a. Click the Windows 95 Start button, point to Settings, and
then click Printers.
b. Double-click the Add Printers icon to start the Add
Printer Wizard.
c. Select the HP LaserJet III driver. The new driver icon will
be added to the Printers folder.
d. With the right mouse button, click the HP LaserJet III icon.
e. Click Set As Default.
The HP LaserJet III driver correctly uses the Windows TrueType
font settings and allows the wizards to detect the fonts
correctly.
To use the HP LaserJet 4 series enhanced features:
a. On the File menu, click Print Setup, select the Specific
Printer option, and select the HP LaserJet 4 series driver.
b. On the File menu, click Print to print the finished document.
Method 2: This method allows you to continue to use an HP LaserJet series 4
printer as the default printer but limits you to TrueType fonts.
The steps are as follows:
a. Click the Windows 95 Start button, point to Settings, and
click Control Panel.
b. Double-click the Fonts folder.
c. On the View menu, click Options. Click the TrueType tab.
d. Select the "Show only TrueType fonts in programs" check box.
(The limitation of this option is that only TrueType fonts
are available to you.)
STATUS
======
