PRJ: PasteLinks Not Re-established When Project Is Mailed

SYMPTOMS
When a Microsoft Project file contains OLE links and is sent as an
attachment via a mail message, you may receive the following message when
you open the attached project from the E-mail application:
Cannot connect to link <path/link_id>. Do you want to delete the link?
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft
Project listed above.

When a project contains OLE links--either remote or local--the current path
and filename are stored as part of the OLE link. When the file is attached
to an E-mail message and sent to a remote site, the OLE link is obsolete
because the file no longer exists in the same path, drive, or computer.
Usually when an attached file is started from an E-mail message, the E-mail
system will place a temporary copy into the directory specified by the TEMP
variable, and it will then start the file according to its association with
Microsoft Project. This process does not usually change the effective, or
working, directory to the TEMP directory.
When you must re-establish the link, the above message will appear for one
of two reasons: (1) the original file has been moved from its original
location, or, (2) the file doesn't exist in the correct directory on the
new computer. Because OLE will only search the working directory and the
PATH for the appropriate file, the link will fail.
