If you choose a non-Publisher document in the Publisher File Open dialog box, the preview area will show only the message:

Microsoft Publisher 97 and Publisher for Windows 95 uses a preview format that is compatible with the Publisher 2.0 for Windows preview format. No other program saves previews the same way.

NOTE: Not all publications have previews. The Publisher File Save dialog box has a Save Preview box. If this box is checked when the publication is saved, the publication will have a preview. If the box is not checked, the publication won't have a preview.
