SUMMARY

To properly restore a Systems Management Server site server, you must have a complete backup of all necessary components.

NOTE: To do this, follow the instructions in Appendix K of the "Systems Management Server Administrator's Guide."

It is important to have a backup of the Windows NT registry. However, if you have reinstalled Windows NT on your site server and do not have the Systems Management Server registry keys saved, it is still possible to restore the server if you have the original Systems Management Server directory structure and database.

To restore a Systems Management Server site server without saved registry keys:

Dump the existing Systems Management Server database.
Copy the existing Systems Management Server directory tree to disk.
Reinstall Systems Management Server to the server using the same site code, service account, and SQL account. Set up a new database using the same name as the old one and the same database parameters.
After the site has been successfully installed, stop Systems Management Server related services.
Reload the current Systems Management Server database from the saved original.
Copy the original Systems Management Server directory tree over the new one.
Run Systems Management Server Setup and perform a Site Reset.
