You can move or copy a Microsoft Money data file to a different location by using Windows Explorer in Microsoft Windows.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

All versions of Money use a three-letter file name extension of .mny for the file name of the data file, for example, "My Money.mny". You can search for all the files that have names that end with a particular file name extension, such as .mny. Then, you can move or copy some or all the files to another location.

To move or to copy a Money data file to a different directory or drive, follow these steps:

View the "Working with files and folders" topic in Windows Help and Support on the computer's hard disk by following these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
  2. In the Search Help box or in the Search online Help box, type Working with files and folders, and then click Search Help.
  3. In the list of topics, click Working with files and folders.

Microsoft Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows

  1. Open the folder that you want to use as the final destination. For example, click Start, click My Documents or click My Computer, and then select the drive and the folder.
  2. Find the file or the files that you want to move or copy.

    For example, My Money.mny is the default Money data file name. The My Money.mny file is typically located in the My Documents folder on the computer. To locate the My Money.mny file, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Search, and then click All Files and Folders.
    2. In the All or part of the file name box, type *.mny.
    3. On the Look in menu, select the drive where Money is installed. By default, Money is installed in drive C.
    4. Click Search.
  3. Right-click the file, and then drag the file to the new folder or to the new drive.
  4. Release the mouse, and then use one of the following methods:
    • Click Move Here to move the file.
    • Click Copy Here to copy the file.
