PUB: Graphics with Very Long File Names Imported as Text

Q135339

------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== If you drag a graphics file with a filename longer than 250 characters onto a publication, the graphics file may import as a text frame full of gibberish and you may receive either of the following error messages: Windows 95 ---------- This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If you click the details button, you may see an error similar to the following: ARTGALRY caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0137:bff76592. Windows NT 3.51 --------------- Cannot save object. An OLE server cannot save an object you are using. Windows may be low on memory or disk space, or the object may not be registered correctly. Publisher restored the last saved changes to this object. RESOLUTION ========== A filename actually includes the entire path in addition to the name of the file. Thus, if you call a picture Mygraphic.tif and you keep it in a folder called My Pictures on your C: drive, the full filename is C:\My Pictures\Mygraphic.tif which is 28 characters long. If the total number of characters in the path and filename of the graphic file is over 250 characters, Publisher may try to import it as RTF (Rich Text Format). It will create a text frame and fill it with binary symbols. If this happens to you, you can correct the problem it one of the following ways: - Shorten the name of the file. - Copy the file to a folder with a shorter name or a folder that is closer to the root of the drive. - Import the file into Publisher by clicking Picture File on the Insert menu (instead of by clicking ClipArt on the Insert menu). - Shorten the name of the graphic file and add it to ClipArt Gallery again. NOTE: If you copy a file to the desktop (and your copy of Windows is installed to the C:\Windows folder), the path to the file is C:\Windows\Desktop\<Your file> which adds 19 characters to the name of the file. STATUS ====== Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher version 3.0 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. MORE INFORMATION ================ You will also be unable to insert this graphic as a ClipArt Gallery object into other applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel. However, the exact error messages and symptoms will vary.
