PRA: RowSource Property Not Updated by Query Builder

SYMPTOMS
Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

When you use the Query Builder to set the RowSource property of a combo box or list box, the RowSource property is not updated to the query's SQL statement.

CAUSE

The RowSource property contains a value list at the time you open the Query Builder. This prevents the Query Builder from updating the RowSource property to the query's SQL statement.

RESOLUTION

Delete the value list from the RowSource property before using the Query Builder to create an SQL statement.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access versions 2.0, 7.0, and 97. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Open the sample database Northwind.mdb (or NWIND.MDB in version 2.0).

Create a new form not based on any table or query and open it in Design view.

Add a combo box to the form and set the following properties:

      Combo Box:
         Name: Combo0
         RowSourceType: Table/Query
         RowSource: One;Two;Three

Click the Build button next to the RowSource property to open the Query Builder.
In the Add Table box, select Shippers, click the Add button, and then close the Add Table box.
In the Query Builder, drag the asterisk (*) from the Shippers table to the query grid.
Close the Query Builder. Note that the RowSource property contains "One;Two;Three" instead of an SQL statement based on the Shippers table.
