Excel: Clearing Locked Check Box Does Not Unlock Cell

Last reviewed: September 13, 1996
Article ID: Q135497
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5,0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you clear the Locked check box on the Protection tab of the Format Cells dialog box, the cell may remain locked.

CAUSE

This behavior will occur if you use the Format Cells dialog box to change any setting on the Patterns tab and you then unlock the cell before you choose OK.

WORKAROUND

To work around this situation, do not change the protection status AND the pattern at the same time. Instead, change the protection status and choose OK to exit the Format Cells dialog box; then, click Cells on the Format menu to bring up the dialog box again.
