The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a RealAudio .ra or .ram file across the Internet, you may receive one of the following three error messages:

Error contacting host, either the server is not responding or is incorrectly specified.
Error in resolving host name.
Cannot play network stream.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer may be configured to work with a proxy or firewall.

RESOLUTION

RealAudio uses a range of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) stream and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) datagram ports that must be specially enabled on the proxy or firewall server by an administrator. To determine if Windows 95 is configured to use a proxy server, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Internet icon.

  3. On the Advanced tab, see whether the Use Proxy Server check box is selected.

  4. Click Cancel.

MORE INFORMATION

Proxy servers and firewalls act as security barriers between your internal network and the Internet, keeping others on the Internet from accessing information on your internal network.
