PRJ4: Resource Assignment Work Changes Unexpectedly |
Q136331
When you change resource assignment information such as cost or work for a fixed-duration task, the work for this and other assigned resources may be changed unexpectedly.
When you use the Resource Assignment dialog box or the Task Information form to assign resources to tasks AND to calculate units based on work values, the unit value is rounded to and displayed with no more than two decimal places.
A change in the Task Form forces Microsoft Project to recalculate the resource assignment information based on the displayed information (which doesn't always have enough precision to allow the work to stay constant).
For example, if a resource is assigned to an 8 hour task for a total of 1
hour, Microsoft Project displays 1 hour and .13 units. However, the units
Microsoft Project calculated to evenly distribute 1 hour of work across 8
hours is .125 units. Therefore, when new information is entered on the Task Form, Microsoft Project recalculates the assignment work based on the displayed units; in this case, Microsoft Project recalculates the work to 1.03h using the following formula:
Work = Duration * UnitsIf the task is resource driven (not fixed), the duration is recalculated and the work remains constant.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
