SYMPTOMS

When you double-click the Excel7.reg file in Microsoft Windows 95, you will receive the following error message:
Cannot import <PATH>EXCEL7.REG: The specified file is not a registry script. You can import only registry files.
When you double-click the Excel7.reg file in Microsoft Windows NT version 3.51, you will receive the following error message:
This is not a registration file. Select a registration file (.REG), and then try again.
You will also receive the same error message in the Registration Editor when you click Import Registry File on the Registry menu, and you choose to import the file Excel7.reg.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the following steps to re-register Microsoft Excel 7.0:
  1. On the Start menu, click Run, and type the following

    <path>Setup /y

where <path> is the path to your Microsoft Excel 7.0 Setup program.

    Setup starts in maintenance mode.
  2. Click the Reinstall button.
Instead of copying files, Setup immediately begins registering the Microsoft Excel 7.0 components again.
