Mail Received from Internet Is Missing Attachment

Last reviewed: October 7, 1997
Article ID: Q136822
The information in this article applies to:
  • The Microsoft Network versions 1.0, 1.05, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, 2.5

SYMPTOMS

You may receive mail from the Internet with text indicating an attachment, but no attachment is included.

CAUSE

This situation may occur for either of the following reasons:

  • The attachment was damaged before the mail was received at The Microsoft Network.
  • The Microsoft Network does not support the method used to encode the attachment (such as the MIME method). Currently, The Microsoft Network supports only the UUENCODE method.

RESOLUTION

Inform people who send you Internet mail with attachments that attachments must be correctly encoded using the UUENCODE method.

This issue has been resolved in MSN 2.5 with the use of POP3 e-mail provided by the Internet Mail client. Internet Mail is installed with Internet Explorer. MSN 2.5 allows you to choose between MIME, SMTP, and POP3.
