PRJ4: Error Deleting Field/Saving Version 3.0 File as Template

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project version 4.0, if you open a project file created in Microsoft Project version 3.0, one of the following symptoms may occur:

  • If you save the file as a template, you receive the following error message
    Saving '<filename>' as a template file will remove all OLE objects. Do you want to continue?"
    where <filename> is the name of the Microsoft Project 3.0 file that you are saving. This error message may appear even if your file doesn't contain OLE objects.

  • If you delete a task in this project file, you receive the following error message:
    Some cells in the selection were linked to another location. These data links are no longer valid.
    This error message may appear even if the cells you are deleting are not linked.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you open a Microsoft Project version 3.0 project file (in Microsoft Project version 4.0) where tasks or fields have been copied and pasted within the file. For example, if you open a Microsoft Project version 3.0 file where Task4 was created by copying and pasting Task3, the error messages described above appear when you save the file as a template or when you delete Task3.

Microsoft Project version 4.0 incorrectly detects the information that was copied/pasted within the Microsoft Project version 3.0 file as OLE information.

WORKAROUND

You can safely ignore these error messages in this case; you will not lose any data in your file when you save the file as a template.
