SUMMARY
Windows NT can use Domain Name System (DNS) servers to resolve host names
into IP addresses in a distributed DNS environment. However, Windows NT
requires additional software to perform as a DNS server itself.

The following companies have developed or are developing DNS server related
products for Windows NT Server:
MetaInfo
MetaInfo shipped DNS version 1.1 in June of 1995. MetaInfo's DNS allows a
Windows NT server to function as a DNS server. MetaInfo DNS is compatible
with Windows NT Workstation and Server versions 3.1, 3.5, and 3.51. This
product supports C2 level security, and has load balancing features for IP
traffic. MetaInfo DNS does not allow a Windows NT based DNS server to query
a Microsoft WINS database for host name to IP address mapping.

The Microsoft DNS server software is in beta. You can participate in the

Microsoft shipped the DNS beta with the Windows NT Resource Kit version 3.5 and 3.51. Microsoft recommends that you use the most current version of the beta software.
