PUB3: Publisher Setup Is Slow or Stopped Responding
PUB3: Publisher Setup Is Slow or Stopped Responding
Q137562
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
========
When you install Publisher for Windows 95, you may see the following
message:
Setup is searching for installed components
The computer appears to stop responding. If you wait long enough (sometimes
several hours, although 5 to 12 minutes is typical), Setup will continue
and complete successfully.
If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL, the Close Program dialog box shows that
Publisher 95 Setup is Not Responding. This is only partially true--Setup is
still running, but it is not responding to Windows messages.
CAUSE
=====
The problem is related to the search routine used by Setup when it searches
for installed clipart files. Setup installs approximately 1200 clipart
files, and it must locate all existing files before installing new
ones.
This does not happen on all computers. Microsoft has received reports that
it happens on computers with slower processors.
STATUS
======
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WORKAROUND
==========
If Publisher Setup seems to stop responding, the only known workaround is
to wait. Setup will eventually proceed.
To determine whether Setup is actually stopped, move the mouse. If the
mouse pointer moves, then Setup is still running.
