If you did not run Setup to remove Microsoft Works 3.0 for Windows prior to installing Works 4.0, you will still have a shortcut folder for Works for Windows 3.0.

You will be able to run the Works 4.x program from the original Works 3.0 shortcut if you have installed the Works 4.0 files in the same folder in which you originally installed Works 3.0. Because the file name for both Works 3.0 and Works 4.0 is the same (Msworks.exe), Works 4.0 overwrites the file for Works 3.0. Because the shortcut is just a pointer to that file name, the shortcut will now start Microsoft Works 4.0.

The files that the "Introducing Works" shortcut are pointing to are located on the Works 3.0 compact disc, which is the cause of the error message described above. The files used by the "Introduction to Microsoft Works 4.0" (or 4.5 or 4.5a) shortcut are located on the hard drive.

How to Remove Old Works 3.0 Shortcuts

1. On Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar.
2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
3. Click Remove.
4. Select the shortcut icons you want to remove and click Remove.
5. Click Close.
