SYMPTOMS

Works 3.0x is not able to open a Word 7.0 file. When you try to open the file, Works doesn't recognize the file format, and tries to open the file as text.

CAUSE

This occurs because of a problem with the Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 converter, Msword6.cnv, that was shipped with Microsoft Works 3.0x. It is able to read a Word 6.0 file, but it will not be able to read a Word for Windows 7.0 file, even though the file formats are the same.

RESOLUTION

To successfully open a Word 7.0 file in Works 3.0x, do one of the following:

Save the Word for Windows 7.0 file as a Word for Windows 2.0 file. -or-
Obtain an updated Msword6.cnv file which will allow you to bring both Microsoft Word 6.0 and 7.0 files into Microsoft Works 3.0x.
