PUB: Publisher Hangs Searching Backward in a Table

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Search command to move backward through a table and you have more than one table in your publication, Publisher may hang (stop responding) after you see the following message:

Publisher reached the beginning of a story. Do you want to keep searching at the end?

This problem occurs if both of the following are true:

Your publication has more than one table.
After you've searched the first table, the first cell of the next table does NOT have a match for the text you are searching for.

RESOLUTION

Do not perform this particular series of actions.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Publisher 98.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

You can re-create this problem by doing the following:

Create a blank publication.
Draw two tables, one above the other.
Type the letter "A" in every cell in both tables, except for the top- left cell in the bottom table.
Click in one of the middle cells of the top table.
On the Edit menu, click Find.
In the Find What field, type "A" (without the quotation marks).
Select the Up option button. Click Search.
Keep clicking Search until you reach the first cell in this table. When you click Search again, you will see the message:
Publisher has reached the beginning of a story. Do you want to continue searching at the end?
Click Yes.

The Search button will now be unavailable (dimmed), and Publisher will stop responding.
