This article explains how to reset or disable the list of fonts at the top of the Font drop-down (sometimes called most recently used font list in Word).

Word 7.x

The most recently used font list shows only the six most recently used fonts. In this version, you can disable the list completely.

Word 6.x

In Word version 6.x on all platforms, the most recently used font list tracks the nine most recently used fonts.

The list can be turned off in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh and Word 6.0 for Windows NT, but it can be reset only in Word 6.0 for Windows. In Word 6.0 for Windows, removing the Winword.opt eliminates the current list of most recently used fonts. The next time you use Word, the list will be rebuilt and will again show the fonts you have used.

To turn off the most recently used font list, run the RegOptions macro supplied in the Macros7.dot template:

  1. On the File menu, click Templates, and then click Add.
  2. Change to the Macros subfolder in the Winword folder (for example, C:\Msoffice\Winword\Macros). Select the Macros7.dot file and click OK. This step adds the Macros7 template to the "Global Templates and Add- ins" box. Click OK.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Macro. In the Macros Available In list, click "Macros7.dot (Global Template)." In the Macro Name list, click RegOptions and then click Run.
  4. In the Section box, click to select Word 7.0 Options.
  5. In the Options box, click to select NoFontMRUList.
  6. In the Setting box, type 1 to turn the "most recently used" list off, and then click OK.

Word 6.x for Windows

To reset the list of most recently used documents, rename the Winword.opt file. Note that renaming this file will also reset several other Word settings, such as AutoFormat and View settings.

Word 6.x for the Macintosh

The Macintosh release of Word 6.0 includes an Advanced Setting file that, when added, will disable the "most recently used" list:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
  2. Click to select the Menus tab.
  3. In the Tools list, click to select Tools.
  4. In the Commands list, click to select ToolsAdvancedSettings.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Close.
  7. On the Tools menu, click to select Advanced Settings.
  8. In the Option box, type NoFontMRUList.
  9. In the Setting box, type Y.
  10. Click the Set button and then click OK.
