If you create a replica database with the same name and location as the Design Master database, you may receive an alert message, such as the following:

The file 'c:\msoffice\access\sample\northwind.mdb' already exists. Replace existing file?

This is followed by the message:

Microsoft Access can't make a new replica at 'c:\msoffice\access\sample\northwind.mdb1' because the source has the same path and filename.

The first message is misleading because a replica cannot have the same name and path as the Design Master database. However, the second message summarizes the problem correctly.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, type a unique name for the replica database when you create it or select a path different from the location of the Design Master database.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access version 7.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

In Windows Explorer, make a copy of the sample database Northwind.mdb and name it Repltest.mdb.
Start Microsoft Access and open the Repltest.mdb.
On the Tools menu, point to Replication, and then click Create Replica.
In the "This database must be closed before you can create a replica" dialog box, click Yes.
In the "Microsoft Access can make a backup of your database before converting it to a Design Master" dialog box, click Yes.
In the Location of New Replica box, select the same folder location as the Repltest.mdb database. In the File Name box, type Repltest.mdb and click OK. Note that you receive the following message:
The file 'c:\msoffice\access\sample\repltest.mdb' already exists. Replace existing file?
Click Yes. Note that you receive a second message:
Microsoft Access can't make a new replica at 'c:\msoffice\access\sample\repltest.mdb1' because the source has the same path and filename.
Clicking Yes or No in this dialog box will take you back to the 'Location of New Replica' dialog box.
