XL7: Anyone Can View Password Protected File from Open Dialog

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, anyone can view a preview of a password protected file by clicking the Preview button in the Open dialog box.

This situation applies to documents that have been saved with password protection (to do this, click Save As on the File menu, and click Options).

WORKAROUND

Method 1: To disable the picture preview, use the following steps:
  1. Open the password protected file.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties.
  3. Click the Summary tab.
  4. Clear the Save Preview Picture check box, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
Method 2: Insert a blank sheet for the first sheet in the workbook. To insert a blank sheet:
  1. Select the first sheet in the workbook.
  2. On the Insert menu click Worksheet.
  3. On the File menu, click Save.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel for Windows We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
