SYMPTOMS

You cannot change the typeface of the symbol you inserted using the Symbol command (Insert menu).

CAUSE

You selected a font other than Normal Text. When you insert a symbol in a font other than Normal Text, Word inserts a character reference to both the character numeric code and the font. As a result, you cannot change the typeface for the symbol character. By contrast, when you use Normal Text, Word references only the character numeric code. Hence, you can apply a font change to the inserted symbol character.

This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION

To change the typeface of a symbol or special character, replace the character with a character based on the Normal Text font.
