    SUMMARY

The Macintosh Performa series of computers come with a Macintosh Performa CD-ROM. This disc contains a copy of the system software that is pre- installed on the Performa.

In certain cases, it may be desirable to install a clean version of the system software as a means of troubleshooting a problem. The Performa CD does not allow you to perform a clean installation of the system software in the same manner as System 7.5 (with System 7.5 and later, you can use the SHIFT+COMMAND+K key combination to install a clean System Folder).

The disc that comes with the Performa restores the original installation of the system software. This article provides information on how to perform a clean installation of the system software.

    MORE INFORMATION

To use the Performa CD-ROM to perform a clean installation of the Macintosh system software on a Performa series Macintosh, do the following:

    1. To start your Macintosh using the Performa CD-ROM, insert the CD, restart the Performa, and immediately after you restart the Performa, use either of the following methods:

          - Press and hold down COMMAND+OPTION+SHIFT+DELETE. Hold these keys down
until the computer has successfully restarted.

            -or-

          - Hold down the C key on the keyboard. Hold this key down until the
            computer has successfully restarted.

    2. After you start you computer from the CD-ROM, open the System Folder on your hard disk drive.
    3. Drag the Finder & System suitcase into the Trash.

This step removes the core components of the Macintosh operating system.

    4. Close the System Folder and rename the System folder to "Storage" (without the quotation marks).
    5. Close the hard disk window.
    6. Double-click the CD-ROM icon.
    7. Open the Restore System Software folder on the CD-ROM. Double-click the Restore All Software icon.

This will install a new System Folder with a new version of the Finder & System suitcase. At this point there is a new version of the operating system on the Macintosh. (That is, any potentially corrupt or damaged files that were present in the previous System Folder have been removed.)

    8. Restart the Macintosh.

When you restart the Macintosh, it uses the hard disk drive, and loads the newly created system.
