    Article ID: Q140287
    Creation Date: 28-NOV-1995
    Revision Date: 01-DEC-1996

The information in this article applies to:

    • Microsoft Access versions 7.0, 97

    SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

When you filter a datasheet by using the Filter Excluding Selection option after you have selected more than one value, the values that you selected are not excluded. They are still returned.

    CAUSE

The filter that is built uses the OR operator instead of the AND operator.

    RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

    1. Open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
    2. Open the Customers table in Datasheet view.
    3. In the Contact Title column, select the values in the first two records, "Sales Representative" and "Owner." To do so, position your mouse pointer until you see the large PLUS sign. Hold down the mouse button, and then drag the mouse pointer to select both values.
    4. Using the right mouse button, click in the values you selected, and then click Filter Excluding Selection on the menu that appears. Note that records with "Sales Representative" and "Owner" are still displayed.
    5. Switch the table to Design view. To do so, on the View menu, click Table Design.
    6. If it is not open, open the table's property sheet. To do so, on the View menu, click Properties.
    7. In the table's property sheet, click in the Filter property's criteria, and then press SHIFT+F2. In the Table Properties dialog box, change the word OR in the filter criteria to AND, and then press ENTER twice.
    8. Switch the table to Datasheet view by clicking Datasheet on the View menu. Click Yes to save the table. Note that records with "Sales Representative" and "Owner" are now filtered out.
