Cannot Load Printer Driver with Windows Printing System
Q140841
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0
- Microsoft Windows Printing System, version 1.0
- Microsoft Windows 95 Operating System
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
========
If you compose a publication for the Windows Printing System, save it, and
then reopen it, you may receive the following message:
The printer selected for this publication, "Windows Printing
System," cannot be initialized or is not installed on the
system.
Publisher will change the publication printer to "Windows
Printing System" instead. This may cause the page layout of
your publication to change, especially the fonts. Make sure to
run Publisher's Layout Checker before printing.
If you then try to print the publication, you will get the following
message:
Cannot load printer driver.
CAUSE
=====
When you install Windows 95, some of the files included with the Windows
Printing System are updated. The printer driver, however, is a Windows 3.1
printer driver.
Microsoft Publisher tries to save all the printer settings with the
publication. This is so you can open several different publications and
have each publication remembers what printer it was composed for and what
print setting you chose for it. Unfortunately with some Windows 3.1 printer
drivers (including the Windows Printing System), there are some settings
that Publisher cannot save with the publication. This triggers the message.
Other programs do not try to save all the printer settings with their
documents. The error, therefore, does not occur with them.
WORKAROUND
==========
To print correctly to the Windows Printing System, do the following:
1. On the File menu, click Print Setup.
2. In the list of printers, select Windows Printing System (if it is not
already selected.)
3. Click OK.
You can now print to the Windows Printing System successfully. You will
have to repeat these steps each time you open the publication.
