XL: How to Copy an Embedded Chart to a Chart Sheet

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, you can copy an embedded chart to a separate chart sheet. This article contains steps to accomplish this task. Use the steps appropriate for your version of Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft Excel 97

  1. Click once on your embedded chart to select it.

    NOTE: In Microsoft Excel 97, you do not double-click embedded charts to activate them.

  2. On the Insert menu click Chart.

  3. In the "Chart Wizard - Step 1 of 4 - Chart Type" dialog box click Finish.

    This will place an identical embedded chart on top of your original.

  4. With this second embedded chart selected, click Location on the Chart menu.

  5. In the Chart Location dialog box, select As New Sheet and then type a name for the new chart sheet in the text box to the right of this option.

  6. Click OK.

The second embedded chart will be moved to the new chart sheet and you will be left with the original embedded chart on your worksheet.

Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0

  1. Add a blank chart sheet to the workbook: select any blank cell on a worksheet. On the Insert menu point to Chart, and then click As New Sheet. Then, click Finish in ChartWizard - Step 1 of 5.

    A blank chart sheet is inserted in the workbook before the active sheet.

  2. To copy the chart, select the worksheet tab that contains the chart you want to copy. Double-click the chart to activate it. Use the DOWN ARROW key to move through the elements of the chart until the Name box (the box at the left end of the formula bar) displays the word "Chart" (without quotation marks). On the Edit menu, click Copy.

  3. To paste the copied chart in the blank chart sheet, select the blank chart sheet tab (this requires two clicks, one to turn off the in- place editing of the embedded chart and another to select the chart sheet), and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

You will now have a copy of the embedded chart on its own chart sheet. There is no link between the two charts, so you can delete the embedded chart. The new chart will be linked to the same data as the embedded chart.
