Mail Attachment Received from America Online Is Unreadable

Last reviewed: July 22, 1997
Article ID: Q141948

The information in this article applies to:

  • The Microsoft Network versions 1.0, 1.05, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, 2.5

SYMPTOMS

You may receive e-mail from an America Online address with an attached file that is unreadable.

CAUSE

The sender used UUENCODE to encode the file, then attached it using the Attach command in America Online's mail program. When America Online sends attachments inserted with the Attach command, the attachments are encoded using MIME. Encoding a UUENCODED file with MIME damages the file.

RESOLUTION

Ask the sender not to use the Attach command to insert a UUENCODED file into a message. The text from the file can be pasted into the message after encoding the file with UUENCODE.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Network does not currently support MIME.
