SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for Windows version 2.x, when you open a document that was created in a later version of Word, you may receive the following message when you run the spelling checker on the document:

Text formatted with (no proofing) was skipped.
In addition, the (no proofing) language property is applied to the entire document.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use the Msword6.cnv converter to open a Word 6.x or later document that has been formatted for English (US) language.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Save the Document in Word 2.x Format

  1. If you have access to Word 6.x, reopen the document in that version.

  2. On the File menu, click Save As.

  3. Save the document in Word 2.0 for Windows format. If this option is unavailable, rerun Word Setup to install the converter.

You should be able to open the 2.0 version of the document in Word 2.x.

Method 2: Change the Language That the Document Is Formatted In

  1. Open the document in Word 2.0.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  3. On the Format menu, click Language.

  4. Select English (US).

  5. Click OK.

  6. Run the spelling checker on the document.

Method 3: Create a Macro That Automatically Changes the Language

To create a macro that automatically changes the language of all documents opened in Word 2.0, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools Menu, click Record Macro.

  2. In the Record Macro Name box, type AutoOpen.

  3. Click OK.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

  5. On the Format menu, click Language.

  6. In the Mark Selected Text As list, select English (US).

  7. On the Tools menu, click Stop Recorder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Msword6.cnv converter supplied with the later versions of Word.
